From the rugged mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, the Douro River traces a path of beauty, history, and tradition through Portugal’s most enchanting landscapes.
The Douro River enters Portugal in Barca d’Alva and flows through one of the country’s most iconic valleys. The slopes along the river are covered with vineyards, olive trees, and almond groves, arranged in terraces that have been shaped by human hands for centuries.
On its way downstream, the river passes through several locks – including Pocinho, Valeira, Régua, Carrapatelo, and Crestuma-Lever – which make navigation possible despite significant differences in water level. These locks are key points along the journey, connecting the upper Douro with the lower part of the valley.
Along the route, visitors can see traditional wine estates (quintas), small riverside villages, and a landscape that shifts from narrow gorges to wide valleys. Approaching Porto, the river gains new energy, flowing beneath monumental bridges and dividing the city from Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Port wine cellars line the riverbank.
Finally, after its long journey from the mountains of Spain through the valleys of Portugal, the Douro reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Here, freshwater meets saltwater in a spectacular embrace, the river’s story flowing into the sea, leaving behind a landscape and a heritage unlike any other.
A mutual fascination between land and river. Nature, gastronomy and culture are all deeply connected to the Douro, in a region plenty of peaceful beauty!

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need prior rowing experience?
Not at all. Our sessions are perfect for beginners as well as those who already have some rowing knowledge. Our instructors will guide you step by step.
Is 5 people per boat the minimum?
No, we can accommodate groups of 4 in each boat. We’ve successfully done this with other groups.
Is 15 people the maximum group size?
Not necessarily! While we recommend 15 for a smoother experience, especially with boat transfers, we’ve hosted groups up to 27 people. Larger groups are possible with a few adjustments.
Can we choose fewer kilometers but still have a 6-day tour?
Yes! Our tours are fully customizable. We can arrange additional activities or simply allow more time for relaxation.
Can we cover the same distance but extend the number of days?
Absolutely! We’re happy to customize your itinerary with additional activities or leisure time to suit your preferences.
I have food restrictions. Is the tour still possible?
Of course! We take food restrictions very seriously and will ensure all your dietary needs are met both at restaurants and during our picnics. Just let us know in advance, and we’ll handle the rest.
What type of accommodations are included?
Our tour includes stays in hotels or similar accommodations, with double or twin rooms for two people. If you prefer a private room, single rooms are available for an additional fee.
